Back to Roast & Toast in Petoskey, Michigan
Roast & Toast – 309 E. Lake St. Petoskey, MI 49770
After flying all night from San Francisco to Traverse City, MI I finally made it back to Petoskey – courtesy of my little sister picking me up and driving in some light snow.
I had an Einstein bagel in the Detroit airport and half a cup of coffee. I haven’t had an Einstein bagel since I left Park City, UT.
About 30 minutes up the road from Traverse City, I started getting some hunger pangs. We were going to stop at Scovie’s in Charlevoix, but it was closed. So we pressed on to Petoskey and Roast & Toast for lunch.
It was great to be back at Roast and Toast – my “third place” of choice for morning business in Petoskey. I had an awesome lunch of black-bean-vegetable soup and a pepper turkey & swiss on homemade rye.
Roast & Toast is a the favorite java joint for many Petoskey residents. The baking, coffee roasting and grill help to keep it warm inside when it’s freezing outside.
It’s now Monday morning and I’m sitting in a back booth in R&T writing this post. Walked in the door at about 6:15 and discovered I had left my wallet in my other jacket. My sister, says she will bring it by, but the kind folks here have fronted me a cup of coffee to help me start the day.
Talked to my partners in The Netherlands via Skype courtesy of the the free Wi-Fi. My attempt to forgo the pancakes has failed – blueberry cakes are on the griddle.
Roast & Toast in Petoskey, MI is the place to jump start your day and mingle with the locals.

Roast & Toast, a place I often refer to as my home away from home, holds many of my dearest memories. Scovies of Charlevoix is a great stop, but there is something unmatchable about the atmosphere of Petoskey’s Roast & Toast cafe. I am currently seated near the window, just left of the chalkboard menu adorned with broken glassware, with my opened Bible, laptop, journal, and of course a Peace Tea on the table before me. The people come and go, often sharing a smile and even more frequently sharing a piece of inspiration for me to sketch or write about. The atmosphere of this place is welcoming and I could ask for nothing more of the place.
