Pinochle & Gin Rummy for Petoskey Winter Nights
My sister and Ptom have got me hooked on card games again. I haven’t played pinochle in a couple of years and gin rummy in maybe 15 years.
Sitting around the dining room table with music, red wine, family and cards – what more could you ask for on a 20 degree night. It got me to thinking about all the kids these days with their gameboys and xboxes – the constant need for stimulation, the high levels of ADD in our society and the decline of western civilization. All of which I think are directly connected to a lack of card playing and board games in the family home.
Well, I’m not sure about that, but I was thinking of how rare it has been in my life. I know many people that still have this type of family time. My parents used to play bridge and drink gin instead of playing it. Monopoly was big for a time as well as many other board games. Somewhere along the line – probably the teen years – that all seemed to drift away.
Ptom has found his Scrabble board, so we will probably have to play some competitive Scrabble.
What do you think – do card games and board games bring families together and help children learn how to think and develop relationships?

I absolutely agree. We don’t spend enough time conversing with our children or teaching them the entire spread of human existance. It seems we are inventing a very shallow culture.
